Wijler joins historic Dutch women’s team for Paris 2024 Olympics

Steve Wijler, Quinty Roeffen, Gaby Schloesser and Laura van der Winkel have been announced as the Dutch team for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

“With a squad of four extremely talented athletes, we go to Paris full of confidence,” head coach Jacqueline Van Rozendaal said. “The mix and chemistry of experienced athletes who have participated in several Games and two for whom it is completely new can take us to great heights.”

The Netherlands are sending a women’s team to the Olympics for the first time since 1992.

It was unlikely that any of Roeffen, Schloesser or van der Winkel would miss out on a trip to Paris after the trio collected that shock team slot at the European Championships. The question was for the single recurve men’s quota.

Wijler secured one of three available tickets at the European qualifier, beating teammate Senna Roos in the final. The 27-year-old still had to win an internal selection process to fill the spot.

Wijler and Schloesser won mixed team silver at the last Olympic Games.

Paris will be Steve’s second Olympics, and he has suggested his last, while Gaby will appear at her third after Rio and Tokyo – and her first since the Games in Brazil, where she represented Mexico, with a team.

Competition at the 2024 Olympic Games starts with qualifying on 25 July.
