Germany names reigning women’s world champions to Olympic team

Katharina Bauer, Michelle Kroppen and Charline Schwarz named to 2024 Olympic team.

German national coach Oliver Haidn named Katharina Bauer, Michelle Kroppen and Charline Schwarz to the Olympic women’s team for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games this summer, following the second stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup in Korea last week.

The reigning world champion trio from Berlin 2023 must still be confirmed by the German shooting federation‘s elite sport committee to the National Olympic Committee.

The nation currently has one men’s spot and three women’s quota places for the Games.

Recently crowned individual European Champion on home soil, in Essen, Bauer was ecstatic about her nomination.

“It means a lot to me. I’m very proud that I made it, that I fought my way through and back from the setbacks of not being nominated for Tokyo and my injury in 2023.”

The 28-year-old will make her Olympic debut on the Esplanade des Invalides in July.

“It’s a dream come true and I’m looking forward to what’s coming next. We want to and will show what we can do.”

Kroppen and Schwarz will enter their second Olympics in Paris after they won recurve women’s team bronze at Tokyo 2020 alongside retired World Cup Champion Lisa Unruh.

“The nomination means everything to me, I’m a bit lost for words,” Schwarz confessed. “I’m grateful for all the support I’ve received so that I can now realise my dream of competing in Paris.”

“The last few weeks and months have not been easy for me, but I’ve fought and tried to show what I’m made of,” a delighted Kroppen added. “It’s a great honour for me that it’s now been enough.”

It’s Elisa Tartler paying the price for the internal selections, despite winning three team bronze medals in the last two months  – at the European Championships in Essen and the two World Cup stages in Shanghai and Yecheon.

“All four of us would have deserved it, but unfortunately only three of us can compete,” Kroppen said.

Next for the German squad is the third stage of the 2024 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Antalya in three weeks, where the World Champions will be fine-tuning their Olympic preparation.

The men’s trio of Florian Unruh, Jonathan Vetter und Moritz Wieser, who just collected a second-place finish in Korea, will attempt to upgrade the nation’s single men’s spot to a full quota of three archers in Türkiye – at the final world qualifier that offers three team places in each gender.
