Preview: Vegas Shoot and indoor finals in Southpoint for last time

The world’s largest archery tournament returns for its 58th year, its last in the current venue, and the Vegas Shoot is set to attract record numbers once again in 2024.

Resident at the Southpoint Hotel and Casino since 2012, the tournament has outgrown the current halls. Rumour has it that the event will move north to Las Vegas‘ central strip in 2025 – and that the exact location of next year’s shoot will be announced on Sunday evening.

As well as the traditional three-days-of-30-arrows followed by a sudden-death shootdown format of the Vegas Shoot, the massive festival also hosts the Indoor Archery World Series Finals.

The 16 top-ranked archers over the season in each category are invited to compete for titles on Saturday night.

Points towards the Indoor Archery World Series elite ranking have been accrued since last October at tournaments in Lausanne, Luxembourg, Taipei and Nîmes. The first two days of competition in Vegas count as the fifth and final leg.

What’s the story? The Vegas Shoot is known as the Superbowl of archery – fitting that the NFL Superbowl is taking place in Vegas one week later – and, particularly in the compound men’s division, winning it is the gold standard. It’s the last time these events will take place in the Southpoint; significant, if not historically meaningful.

Who’s competing?

A record 4491 professional and amateur archers are competing in this year’s Vegas Shoot. The line-up for the Indoor Archery World Series Finals – 16 in each of the four championship categories – will only be confirmed after the second day of competition.

Among the archers competing in Vegas are reigning circuit champions Steve Wijler, Lim Duna, Bodie Turner and Elisa Roner, as well as last year’s Vegas Shoot compound open and women’s championship winners Kris Schaff and Tanja Gellenthien.

Competition at the Vegas Shoot starts on Friday.
