Linda Ochoa-Anderson top seed at home world champs

Mexico’s Linda Ochoa-Anderson scored 701 out of a possible 720 points to lead the compound women’s 72-arrow 50-metre ranking round on home turf at the Mexico City 2017 Hyundai World Archery Championships.

“I feel great,” she said! “I changed my focus a bit to think about total score each end, and then I started a bit lazy with a 56 [out of a possible 60 points], and I think I was ranked low. Then, I told myself ‘you’ve got to put gas into it’ and it worked much better towards the back half.”

The 30-year-old averaged 58 points per end over the first half and scored 348 points to sit down in eigth.

In the second half, she held firm, dropping only seven points for 353, while her competitors all dropped off. Ochoa-Anderson was the only compound woman over 700 points for the 72-arrow round.

“I didn’t expect it was going to be good enough to be first seed, but it happened, so great. I wanted to be in the top eight to get a bye and I achieved that,” said Linda.

Belgium’s Sarah Prieels, the second seed who finished two points below Ochoa-Anderson, said: “It was a good day. I wasn’t expecting to be second but I’m a bit disappointed that I didn’t make 700 as it was the last chance of the season.”

“I’ll take 699 anytime, though.”

World number one Sarah Sonnichsen from Denmark tied Prieels finonal score but had one 10X less. India’s Jyothi Surekha Vennam was fourth and Turkish woman Yesim Bostan, fifth.

Slovenia’s Toja Ellison, and Song Yun Soo and So Chaewon from Korea all also received third-round byes.

“I shot a lower score than I expected so I’m not very satisfied,” said So. “The thing is, this was just qualifications and we have more important eliminations coming up.”

Song, So and Choi Bomin were the top ranked team with Mexico second and Denmark third
