Photo essay: Team eliminations at Antalya 2016

1. States go for two

Reo Wilde, who was the fourth man on the team in Shanghai, is pictured shooting in the compound men’s team semifinal against Denmark. The US beat Indonesia and India before taking down the 2013 World Archery Champions, 234-232, to claim a gold final berth.

The States men have made all three finals on the circuit this year, have a silver and a gold – and a chance to add a second in Antalya.

2. Not threatened

The Korean women surrendered just two sets points in three matches as they cruised towards another final. That set loss came on an event-low set score of 54 out of 60 points in the quarters against the USA.

Still, they rallied and smashed in three consecutive 57s to take their semifinal match over Italy.

Silver medallists at the worlds in 2015, Inge van Caspel, Martine Couwenberg and Irina Markovic have themselves into another team final. The Dutch women just knocked out the impressive Colombian squad in the quarterfinals in this photo.

5. Rio practice

Shooting as a trio for the first time since the USA Olympic team was announced, Zach Garrett, Brady Ellison and Jake Kaminski knocked out Malaysia first – and then beat Germany in a shoot-off, 27-24.

They fell short to Mexico in the semis, 5-3, but the Mexicans still need a team spot for Rio, while the US men sit pretty on their tickets to Brazil.

6. Out of time

There was drama in the first round of the compound women’s competition. The second-seeded Danes appeared to take a narrow victory over Great Britain, but the match judge deemed the last arrow of the Danish team to have been shot out of time.

An appeal was lodged, but the decision upheld, and Denmark was docked an arrow score – and the Brits went through.

(Indonesia then beat Britain in the quarterfinals.)

7. World Champion

The Russian recurve women’s team took a slightly-unexpected world title in Copenhagen in 2015. An in-form Korea in the Antalya final will be a good test of their form at this stage in the Olympic lead-up.

8. Italian roll

Italy’s compound men lost the final in Medellin to the USA. Fast forward one stage and Pagni, Nencioni and Pagnoni have another crack at the States. Same or different story?
