Viktor Orosz Defends Junior Indoor World Title

Viktor Orosz, the defending champion from the last edition of the World Archery Indoor Championships, in Nimes in 2014, was back in the compound junior men’s gold medal match in Ankara.

He faced Christos Aerikos from Greece for his second consecutive indoor title and third junior world title after taking an outdoor crown in Yankton in 2015.

Viktor started stronger: Shooting three perfect arrows in the opening set and taking a one-point advantage, 30-29.

Both Orosz and Aerikos scored 28 in the second, then the Grecian athlete nullified Viktor’s advantage in the third: The pair had 87 points each with six arrows to shoot.

From then on out, Viktor was perfect. Christos was not, he let his first arrow of the fourth end get away from him, and it landed in the nine.

Final score: 147-146, and another world title for Orosz.

“It’s amazing. I got a third world championships win out of three tries. It’s the best feeling I’ve ever had,” he said.

Orosz’s list of titles, though he is aged just 17, is incredibly impressive. He’s won every gold medal match that he has competed in, winning the three youth world crowns and a European indoor youth title in Slovenia in 2015.

“I want to say thank you to everyone who cheered for me at home: My family, my girlfriend, my club, everybody,” added Viktor. “Thank you!”

In the bronze medal match, Russia’s Anton Bulaev, aged 19, beat Turkey’s Furkan Dernekli in a shoot-off, after the pair tied at 143 in regulation.
