4 Hyundai Archery World Cup Final places depend on Berlin medal matches
The Berlin medal matches will decide four of the places for the 2018 Hyundai Archery World Cup Final in a thrilling end to the last stage of the year.
Korea’s Lee Eun Gyeong, Croatia’s Domagoj Buden, the Netherland’s Jody Vermeulen and Taylor Worth of Australia are into win-and-in situations – and control their own destinies.
Thomas Chirault and Pierre-Julien Deloche of France, Korean woman Kang Chae Young and Italy’s Marcella Tonioli, however, will watch from the sidelines as their Samsun invitations rest in the balance of those in the arena shooting the Berlin medal matches.
For the first time in 2018, Hyundai Archery World Cup stage winners automatically qualify for the circuit final. The new rule has done exactly what it was designed to do – driving the race to Samsun right down to the wire.
Recurve men
Qualified: Lee Woo Seok, Kim Woojin, Mauro Nespoli, Steve Wijler, Brady Ellison and Mete Gazoz
Undecided: Taylor Worth or Thomas Chirault
Taylor Worth qualifies for the Hyundai Archery World Cup Final if he wins his bronze medal match against Steve Wijler. Third place would give him enough points to climb ahead of Chirault in the rankings; fourth is not enough.
Brady Ellison has qualified for his ninth consecutive World Cup Final. Kim Woojin is the defending Hyundai Archery World Cup Final Champion.
Recurve women
Qualified: Chang Hye Jin, Ksenia Perova, Deepika Kumari, Tan Ya-Ting, Lei Chien-Ying and Lisa Unruh
Undecided: Lee Eun Gyeong or Kang Chae Young
The second Korean spot in Samsun is down to whether Youth Olympic Lee Eun Gyeong beats home favourite Lisa Unruh in the Berlin final.
If she wins she qualifies as a stage champion but if she loses she has the same number of points as teammate Kang, who wins that tie because she has a higher world ranking.
This roster includes the reigning Olympic Champion in Chang and World Archery Champion in Perova.
Compound men
Qualified: Mike Schloesser, Kim Jongho, Stephan Hansen, Braden Gellenthien, Abhishek Verma and Kris Schaff
Undecided: Domagoj Buden or Pierre-Julien Deloche
Domagoj Buden shoots against Mike Schloesser for individual gold. If he wins, he qualifies. French archer PJ Deloche will be rooting for the Dutchman, though, because if Mike picks up a second stage gold on the year, a fourth spot qualifying on points opens up – and it’s his.
Gellenthien is the defending Hyundai Archery World Cup Final Champion.
Compound women
Qualified: Sara Lopez, Yesim Bostan, Sophie Dodemont, Linda Ochoa-Anderson, So Chaewon and Chen Yi-Hsuan
Undecided: Marcella Tonioli or Jody Vermeulen
Vermeulen has come from nowhere to make her first gold medal match on the Hyundai Archery World Cup circuit. If she can beat Dodemont, then she is the biggest surprise qualifier for Samsun of the year.
If she loses, she get’s nothing – and Marcella Tonioli qualifies in the fourth points spot (since Sara Lopez won two stages).
At the age of 44 and returning from a four-year hiatus, Dodemont has qualified for the season-ending event for the first time. Lopez is the defending Hyundai Archery World Cup Final Champion.
The fourth stage of the 2018 Hyundai Archery World Cup takes place in Berlin, Germany on 16 to 22 July.
