Nemati’s worlds victory 25th in IPC’s top moments of 2017

Zahra Nemati’s second world championship gold medal has been named number 25 on the International Paralympic Committee’s list of the top 50 moments in para sport in 2017. The Iranian recurve archer united the Paralympic and world titles with victory at the 2017 World Archery Para Championships in Beijing in September.

In 2017, the two-time Paralympic Champion reclaimed the world title she first won in Bangkok in 2013. Shortly before her individual gold medal match in China, Nemati also won bronze in the mixed team open with Pouriya Jalalipour.

Nemati has made a name for herself both as a talented athlete and as a rolemodel for women’s empowerment through sport. 

At London 2012, she made history, becoming the first Iranian woman to win gold at either the Olympic or Paralympic Games. She won the hearts of the local crowd in Rio in 2016, competing in both events, and won gold at the Paralympics for a second consecutive time.

Nemati’s amazing story, from taekwondo champion to archery double gold medallist, was drawn further into the spotlight when she was chosen to carry the flag of Iran during the Olympic opening ceremony.

The United Nations named Nemati as an ambassador for women with disabilities in sport and she addressed a United Nations committee in New York in June 2014.
