Prof Dr Erdener had been a member of the International Olympic Committee’s Executive Board since 2014.
He was elected to one of two open IOC Vice President positions at the 129th IOC Session, held in Rio de Janeiro ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games.
“I am honoured to have been elected to the position of IOC Vice President,” said Prof Dr Erdener.
“The principles of Olympism are ever-more relevant in the modern world, and I am committed to supporting the goal of the IOC in building a peaceful and better world through sport.”
Prof Dr Erdener is now the second World Archery President to have become an IOC Vice President. Jim Easton served in the role from 2002 to 2006.
Other positions the World Archery President currently holds include Chair of the IOC’s Medical and Sports Science Commission, Chair of the IOC’s Youth Olympic Games Tripartite Working Group, ASOIF Council Member, Turkish NOC President and WADA Executive Committee Member.
