Quotes of the day
Turin – 8 July 2011
Here quotes from the archers after their matches today.
Recurve Men Tarundeep RAI (IND) I thought I was going to win the match against Marco GALIAZZO (ITA), but I did not win. We were at 3-3 after the third set, then I won the fourth one, but due to a very bad arrow we got to 5-5 after the fifth set. At the final shoot-off I shot a 9 instead of a 10 and I lost the match. It was bad luck! Jason LYON (CAN) I was very close to victory. IM Dong-Hyun (KOR) is a fantastic opponent. He is one of the best archers in the world. So I think this is definitely a good experience! While I was shooting I just wanted to execute a good shot but, you know, actually at the final shoot-off I did not have enough time to think about shooting. Laurence GODFREY (GBR) After 1/8 I had a very tough match. But I was okay. I shot against Ukraine for the second time. Ukrainians are very strong archers. I had to shot at my top. It was a very good match. I shot: 29-30-29-28 and I am very pleased with this result. Now I am waiting until the next match—the match on the screen. The match where everything happens! After 1/4 I feel a bit disappointed about this match, but globally my competition was good, I shot my personal best in the qualification round and that gave a top 8 position before the elimination round. I had a tight first match against IVASHKO (UKR) and then a high scoring match against another Ukrainian. But the Korean was too good today. Jeff HENCKELS (LUX) This match was pretty easy for me. After we won the team quota for the Olympic Games, all the stress I had before stepped back. Now I feel more relaxed and that is why it was easier for me just to shoot a good match. Brady ELLISON (USA) The shooting was really good, really good. The weather is really nice and I hope we will have the same weather for the finals day. Baard NESTENG (NOR) It was the match with one of the top world ranked archers. I tried to shoot my best, but it was not enough. I came here to win a quota for my team. And I am very happy because we won it for Norway. Recurve Women Denisse Astrid VAN LAMOEN (CHI) After 1/16 I am happy to have achieved a place for my country, but now I need to focus for the next match. I do not want to think about London until the end of the day, otherwise I feel I will lose my concentration. By the way, I know that in my country people are celebrating already! After 1/4 I felt myself pretty confident. Each end was really confident. We had a little wind. But it only helped me to concentrate on each shot. I did not pay attention to anything except my shooting. I was not nervous absolutely. I felt strong. Katsiaryna TIMOFEYEVA (BLR) My shooting was lighter today than yesterday. I did not know that I was getting the London quota place for Belarus and my coach did not say anything to me about that. I was told about it only after I had won the match. I was shooting as usual and I was happy to go to the quarterfinals. Knowing that I have gained a quota for my country I am now even happier. Still I hope that we will win the team quota and will manage to go to London with the whole team. Kristine ESEBUA (GEO) I have very good feelings at the moment. I feel easy and the shooting was light. The wind did not disturb my shooting. My coach made corrections and I followed them. It is a great victory for me. Two Georgian athletes entered into the top 8 in these championships. Unfortunately we did not get a chance to win the team quota. But we are ready to work to get the team quota. What happened during the team elimination was unfair, and from now we will use all the chances to go to Olympics.
Khatuna NARIMANIDZE (GEO) Everything was wonderful. I felt a bit nervous. Everyone wants to win, and I wanted to win too. But I lost. But I am in 1\4 and I have an Olympic quota now. The most important is that my coach was near me, and he helped me. I hope I will go to the Olympic Games for the fourth time. I wish I could advance on further. I like my results in these championships. Compound Men Slavko TURSIK (SLO) I am very happy to be here with the whole team in such a nice place, with so many shooters from all around the world and among very kind volunteers. I am satisfied with our team results and I cannot find any weak point in this event. Maybe only the hot weather, but no one can do anything about it! Christopher PERKINS (CAN) This last match was nerve-wracking. At the beginning I was a little bit nervous but then I tried to focus on timing and I pretended I was shooting at home. I was trying to keep the same timing for every arrow I was shooting, and it was great! I am really happy! Gabriel BADENHORST (RSA) As you can see, my heart is still beating fast. It was a thrilling match. It is the first time I got this far. Besides I am a good friend of Sergio PAGNI (ITA), we have known each other for a long time, so I really enjoyed this match. Just know I deserve to be here, because I practised a lot. Seppie CILLIERS (RSA) It is a great opportunity and a great experience for me to be here. I had luck on my side when I beat Peter ELZINGA but in the following match I found Reo WILDE. He is really amazing and I think he is the best compound shooter in the world. It is always good shooting against him but losing is not so nice. Compound Women Jamie VAN NATTA (USA) I wish I had more matches! I have not shot as strongly as I usually do, so I have no excuses. I am okay, just a little bit sad because I am out, but I like shooting, I like talking to people, I like being here, in this beautiful venue. I am having fun, that is all! We will see what will happen next time. Pascale LEBECQUE (FRA) I badly began this competition, mainly the first half of the qualification round. Then I could raise my performances arrow after arrow to shoot good rounds. The Korean opened a door at the beginning of the quarterfinal, and I took it. I am very happy to shoot for the semifinal, and to be on the Piazza Castello. Albina LOGINOVA, RUS What would it mean for you to become the world champion for the second time?
That would be great! Of course I will be happy. But I will be able to tell more after. We will see what will happen. How was the shooting today? The weather is good. And it seems like there is no wind, but this was the issue. Except the last two ends I was aiming to the right side of the gold, because the arrows were blown from the centre to the left. I felt a bit nervous but I shot well. I did the maximum of what I planned for today and I am very happy. Thomas AUBERT, Séverine DERIAZ, Mariya LARKINA, Dajana PICCOLO, Matteo PISANI, Rebecca RABOZZI World Archery Communication
