First gold medal goes to Italy!

The second day of qualifications also determined exceptionally the final ranking of the team competitions. Italy won gold on the men’s side and Sweden was crown again in the women categories. Then for individuals, the top 16 of each category qualified for the eliminations tomorrow.  Men Team The first gold medal of the Field Archery World Championships has been won by Italy.The Italians, who won the silver medal in Gothenburg two years ago, won the men's team title following two days of qualifying rounds, on Tuesday and Thursday. Thanks to Michele Frangelli's top place finish in the men's recurve qualifying standings after two rounds, Giuseppi Seimandi's (photo) third in the barebow, and Alessandro Lodetti's seventh in the compound, the Italian trio scored a combined 1421 points, giving them a 13 points advantage over Sweden.   The Swedes clinched silver thanks to Mathias Larsson (1st, barebow), Morgan Lundin (5th, compound), and Goran Bjerendal (5th, recurve). For the second successive World Championships, Germany won the bronze medal, with 1395 points, thanks to Sebastian Rohrberg (2nd, recurve), Josef Meyer (7th barebow) and Jens Asbach (10th, compound).   Defending champions The United States were fourth, while Britain - thanks to Tom Duncan (6th, recurve), Liam Grimwood (2nd, compound) and Peter Mulligan (9th, barebow) - were fifth.   The team elimninations, originally scheduled for Friday, were cancelled, after wet weather forced a wash-out on Wednesday. Organisers ruled the outcome would be decided by results of the two qualification rounds.  Women Team Sweden (photo) have made a successful defence of the women's team title at the Field Archery World Championships at Llwynypia. The trio of Elin Kattstrom, Ulrika Sjowall and Annika Ahlund secured the Swedes a second successive gold, with a combined total 1496 points, eight more than silver medallists Italy, and Germany, who took the bronze. Ahlund took first place after two qualifying rounds in the barebow, Sjowall was third in the compound standings and Kattstrom fifth in the recurve, and that combination was good enough to win the title again.   Jessica Tomassi (1st, recurve), Eleonora Strobbe (7th, barebow), and Anastasia Anastasio (11th, compound), collected a combined total of 1488 points. Germany's top placed trio of Silke Hoettecki (5th, compound), Monica Jentzen (3rd, barebow) and Lisa Unruh (4th, recurve) finished just two points behind the Italians. Home nation Britan took fifth place with 1450 points, thanks to Naomi Folkard (2nd, recurve), Tracy Anderson (14th, compound) and Maryann Richardson (11th, barebow).   Recurve Men Defending champion Michele Frangilli remained on course to retain his World Field Archery men’s recurve title when he top scored for the second qualification day running at Llwynypia, in South Wales. Leading after Tuesday’s opening round, the Italian top scored again with his 36 arrows today, giving him a total of 449 points from 87 arrows, as he moves on to Friday’s elimination stage. It was the same 1-2-3 finish on Thursday as it had been 48 hours earlier.   Germany’s Sebastian Rohrberg – the silver medallist in Gothenburg two years ago – went through in second place, 11 points adrift of Frangilli, and another Italian, Alvise Berlotini, qualifying in third place, a further 20 points behind.   Of the home interest, Tim Duncan and Jonathan Shales  both went through thanks to a 6th and 9th place respectively after two rounds. Sweden’s Bjorn Jansson piped Frenchman Thomas Aubert to the 16th and final qualifying place. Jansson, who was 19th after his 51 arrows on Tuesday, clinched 16th place overall by one point from Aubert, who dropped from 13th place to 17th after Thursday’s round.   Recurve Women In the recurve tournament, Jessica Tomasi of Italy went through in top place with 517 points, eight ahead of Britain's Naomi Folkard, who took part in the Olympic Games last month. Austria's Sabine Mayrhofer qualified in third place, while defending champion Dolores Cekada of Croatia took fifth place. Britain secured three places for the eliminations thanks to Michele Kiddy, in 11th, and Amy Oliver, 12th.   Compound Men In the men’s compound, Dave Cousins  (photo)  of the United States turned in an impressive performance on Thursday to qualify in top place. He swapped places with Britain’s Chris White, who had headed the standings on Tuesday, but dropped to third, while another British competitor, Liam Grimwood, stayed in second place. Defending champion Morgan Lundin, of Sweden, went through in 5th place, while Neil Wakelin clinched the 16th and final qualifying place to ensure three British archers in the eliminations.   Compound Women World Cup finalists Ivana Buden and Jamie Van Natta took the top two qualification places as they moved through to the elimination stages of the Field Archery World Championships. Buden, from Croatia, and Van Natta, of the United States, will line up with Britain's Nichola Simpson and Amandine Bouillot of France in Lausanne at the World Cup Grand Final later this month, and both appear determined to turn up in Switzerland with a world field archery title to their credit.   It was Buden who came out on top of the women's compound standings after top scoring on the day with 196 points from her 36 arrows, to give her an overall top score of 563 - three points better than Van Natta, and eight points clear of Sweden's Ulrika Sjowall.   Defending champion Silke Hoettecke of Germany qualified for Friday in fifth place with 549 points, while host nation Great Britain has two qualifiers: Tracy Anderson, who went through in 14th place, and Lucy Holderness, who claimed the 16th and final place - beating GB team-mate Maggie Squires in a shoot-off!  Barebow Men Sweden qualified in first and second place in the men’s barebow tournament thanks to Mathias Larsson, with 514 points from 108 arrows, and Mikael Olsson (510). Defending champion Giuseppi Seimandi of Italy staked his claim for a second successive gold medal, as he moved up from 12th after the first round, to 3rd in the overall standings. Host nation Great Britain will have representation in the barebow eliminations thanks to Peter Mulligan, who was 18th in the standings after Tuesday’s first round, but moved up to 9th thanks to his performance on Thursday.   Barebow Women There will be two home archers in the barebow eliminations, as Maryann Richardson and Jane Rees went through in 11th and 12th respectively. Sweden's Annika Ahlund qualified in top place with 457 points, four better than Becky Nelson-Harris of the USA, with Gothenburg silver medallist Monica Jentzen two points further adrift. Italy's Luciana Pennacchi, the gold medallist in 2006, went through in 14th place.   Friday’s competition The eliminations stages consist of two courses of 12 targets. Scores start at zero again. Only the top eight participants move on after the first course.
