World Archery President Prof Dr Erdener made honorary IOC member

World Archery President Prof Dr Ugur Erdener was unanimously elected an honorary member of the International Olympic Committee during the organisation’s 142nd session today in the French capital ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

A member of the body since 2009, his current term ends on 31 December 2024.

During a speech introducing the vote, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach praised Prof Dr Erdener’s extensive work across the Olympic movement, including as head of the Turkish Olympic Committee since 2011, his many roles within the IOC itself, and his leadership of the sport of archery.

“You have greatly developed the sport, modernised the sport, made it more attractive, and it enjoys an ever-bigger viewership across the world and not only the traditional archery countries,” he said.

President Bach also highlighted the World Archery’s President’s medical background and his related roles as chair of the International Olympic Committee’s medical committee and position on the executive of the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Prof Dr Erdener has held the presidency of World Archery since 2005.
