Seven compounds confirmed for World Cup Final on rankings
Four compound men and three compound women are locks for the 2021 Hyundai Archery World Cup Final as points qualifiers. The remaining places will be decided after Saturday’s final fours at the third stage of the season in Paris.
Kris Schaff (USA), Federico Pagnoni (Italy), Adrien Gontier (France) and Mathias Fullerton (Denmark) are confirmed for the men’s event.
Paige Pearce (USA), Andrea Becerra (Mexico) and Toja Ellison (Slovenia) make the women’s line-up.
Two men’s and two women’s slots will be decided on Saturday.
Abhishek Verma can only qualify for Yankton if he wins individual gold in Paris – but Anton Bulaev can accrue enough points to knock Jozef Bosansky out of a slot by finishing second.
Should Mike Schloesser win his second stage or Schaff move from being a points qualifier to a stage victor, another ranking spot would open up.
This would qualify Bosansky and either Jean Philippe Boulch or Bulaev, depending on the latter’s final result in the French capital.
Alejandra Usquiano holds the keys to lock-up the compound women’s roster.
Should she win in Paris, she will eliminate Colombian teammate and reigning Hyundai Archery World Cup Champion Sara Lopez, who is currently a points qualifier but not safe, from the Yankton line-up.
The last points place – which is between the USA’s Savannah Vanderwier and World Archery Champion Natalia Avdeeva of Russia – won’t be decided until a world-ranking tiebreaker when the new list is released on Monday.
If Vanderwier wins it, Avdeeva will also go – as the host country spot would be surrendered due to Pearce’s presence in the line-up. (Each country can send a maximum of two archers per category to the season-ending event.)
If Avdeeva wins it, it seems fairly likely that the USA will send Vanderwier to fill the host nation spot, although another archer could be chosen.
The only way Usquiano can book a ticket to the 2021 Hyundai Archery World Cup Final is by winning gold in Paris, as she cannot catch teammate Lopez on points – and Nora Valdez is locked in as the gold medallist at the season-opener in Guatemala City.
There will be some very interested spectators watching from the athletes’ stands this weekend.
