Bangkok archery centre hosts Mel Nichols compound coaching seminar

World Archery’s accredited partner centre in the Thai capital of Bangkok recently held a week-long compound seminar with US coach Mel Nichols.

More than 60 participants from 11 countries attended the September workshop.

“Many of the coaches in Southeast Asia are fairly new to compound coaching,” said Mel. “They are eager to learn. They asked a lot of great questions and I hope they took away something that will help their archers become a little bit better.”

Topics covered included technique, tuning, warm-up, fitness and recovery, training aids and games, and mental approach.

Nichols has coached several successful athletes, most recently standing behind world number one Alexis Ruiz as she won four individual medals on the 2019 Hyundai Archery World Cup circuit.

This is the second consecutive year in which the Bangkok centre has hosted a compound workshop for Southeast Asian countries. Last year’s seminar was conducted by USA international archer Steve Anderson.

Archers in the region are preparing for the upcoming Asian Games that will take place in December in the Philippines.

Bangkok will also host the Asian para and able-bodied championships, offering quota places to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic and Olympic Games, in October and November.
