Alexis Ruiz named world number one after first career victory in Berlin

Alexis Ruiz has made it into the number one spot in the compound women‘s world rankings after winning the fourth stage of the 2019 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Berlin, Germany and the release of a new list on Monday 8 July.

The 19-year-old was the only archer to climb the podium at every stage of the international circuit in 2019, her debut international season. Ruiz won bronze medals in Medellin and Shanghai, took silver in Antalya and won the first senior event of her career in Berlin.

“It means everything. I worked so hard this year. Being on the finals on every stage, I think it all led up to this,” she said, after victory in Germany.

Sara Lopez, who had briefly regained the top spot, fell down to number two. Previously second, Yesim Bostan dropped to fourth.

Berlin silver medallist Sophie Dodemont is back up to third, matching her career high.

There are two archers from the USA occupying top spots in the world rankings. Brady Ellison, who became recurve men’s world number one after winning the 2019 Hyundai World Archery Championships, remains in the leading position.

Berlin winner Mete Gazoz climbed two spaces in the recurve men’s list to third. It has now been a year since Mete made it into the top 10.

Kang Chae Young and Mike Schloesser are unmoved from the number one spots in the recurve women’s and compound men’s ranking.

The man who beat Schloesser in the shoot-off in Germany, Evren Cagiran, rose seven places to fourth. His previous career-high was ninth.
