Indonesia, DPR Korea awarded Olympic places from 2018 Asian Games results

Indonesia and DPR Korea have been awarded two quota places each, one of each gender, for the archery competitions at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games from the results of the last Asian Games, which were held in Jakarta in late 2018.

The four available spots were assigned taking into account the results of the 2019 Hyundai World Archery Championships.

According to the Olympic qualification procedure, up to four quota places are awarded at each of the African, Pan American, Asian, European and Pacific Games. They are awarded to the nations of the top-ranked recurve mixed team and top-ranked recurve men and women that represent a country not already qualified. The individual spots are only available at the Asian, European and Pan American Games.

(Spaces are limited to the top four finishers. Any leftover spots are added to the final qualification tournament.)

At the 2018 Asian Games, DPR Korea’s Pak Yongwon and Kang Un Ju finished second to Japan in the recurve mixed team competition. Since Japan will receive the host country’s full quota at the end of the qualification process, DPR Korea receives the mixed team spot from Jakarta.

Korea’s Kim Woojin and Lee Woo Seok came first and second in the recurve men’s competition – but Korea qualified a full team at the world championships. Third-placed Riau Ega Agatha of Indonesia receives the men’s quota place for the Games.

Agatha famously upset Woojin in the second round at the Olympics in 2016.

His teammate Diananda Choirunisa lost the recurve women’s gold medal match to China’s Zhang Xinyan in Jakarta – but again, China secured a full team quota in the women’s competition at the worlds, so Indonesia collects the spot.

The next opportunity for athletes to win quota places for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games is the 2019 European Games in Minsk, Belarus. Like the Asian Games, up to four places are available. Only European archers are competing.
