Lee Woo Seok knocks Steve Wijler off world #1 spot

At the end of his debut international season, Korean 21-year-old Lee Woo Seok has been named the world’s number one ranked recurve man for the first time.

Woo Seok first appeared when he won the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing in 2014 but didn’t make the senior squad in Korea until the start of 2018.

He took individual medals at all three of the Hyundai Archery World Cup stages at which he competed, taking bronze in Shanghai, gold in Antalya and silver in Berlin, closing his campaign with a second-place finish at the Hyundai Archery World Cup Final in Samsun.

During the season, he also finished runner-up at the Asian Games and revealed he started archery in school because it offered more snacks.

Another relative newcomer, Dutch archer Steve Wijler had held the world number one spot since winning the European Championships at the start of September.

Chang Hye Jin, Mike Schloesser and Yesim Bostan retained their number one rankings in the other categories. Mete Gazoz, Deepika Kumari, Andrea Marcos and Linda Ochoa-Anderson all jumped up into the top five in their respective divisions.
