Top Shanghai qualifiers VAN DEN BERG, HANSEN out

“I kept hitting low,” said Sjef VAN DEN BERG. “It happens when I let a little bit of tension creep in. I don’t know why it happened this time, and I turned my sight a little bit, but I kept shooting low. I had too many nines and eights.”
Japan’s Hideki KIKUCHI only let VAN DEN BERG score one set point in the defeat.
The 19-year-old number one seed wasn’t comfortable: “Normally we shoot this elimination round after the lunch break and have practice arrows, but we didn’t get that today.”
“I can’t say I lost because of the bye, but I do see it as a disadvantage.”
Sjef has a shot at a Shanghai medal in the team event: “I have high hopes. We are three strong guys.”
Compound men’s number one seed Stephan HANSEN lost in his first match after the two byes in a shoot-off to Demir ELMAAGACLI from Turkey, who was ranked 33rd.
See scores from individual eliminations at the first 2014 Archery World Cup stage in Shanghai.
