Cox wins gold as USA takes 3 compound junior world crowns

The USA junior compound squad took three World Archery Indoor Championship titles in Yankton, USA, as Cassidy Cox – the silver medallist in the event at the last world indoors – beat top-ranked qualifier Elisa Roner of Italy in the compound junior women’s gold medal match.

“I guess my hard work has paid off and I’m really happy with my progress over the last two years,” said Cox.

“I started off from behind, and then I also shot an eight somewhere in there. I was pretty nervous, and shaky. I thought, there’s nothing I can really do now except make good shots, that’s all I can really do.”

Cox had two arrows on the edge of the 10-ring nearing the end of the match.

Both required a call by the target judge - and both were called in.

That secured the two-point win, 145-143, and Cassidy’s first individual world title at the age of 19, three years removed from the outdoor crown gong she won at this very same venue in Yankton.

Cox also collected gold with the US compound junior women’s team at the 2018 World Archery Indoor Championships, as did their junior men’s counterparts.

Although Curtis Broadnax couldn’t add the individual indoor youth title to his outdoor crown won in Rosario, Argentina in October 2017 – losing the final to Danish archer Simon Olsen – he did take team gold with Zachary Harris and Ethan King.

“The team match was fun. You weren’t under such a whole lot of pressure because you had a teammate to back you up if you made a little mistake,” said King, who finished fourth individually.

“I felt it was important the person leading off [each end] made a good strong shot to keep the momentum of the team going.”

Both USA senior compound teams also shoot for gold in Yankton.

The 2018 World Archery Indoor Championships takes place in Yankton, USA on 14-19 February.
