Universality invite completes Oscar Ticas’ Olympic redemption

Oscar Ticas (El Salvador) is set to finally make his Olympic debut after being announced as one of the four archers to be awarded a universality invitation to Paris 2024.

Ticas qualified for the Games in 2016 then tested positive for a steroid and received a one-year ban.

He was the first archer not to win a spot for Paris at the Americas continental qualifier in April – and it quickly looked like his Olympic dream was in tatters once again – but El Salvador is on the list of 93 countries eligible to apply for archery’s four universality places.

(The spots are only open to emerging sporting nations.)

Ticas, Lam Dorji (Bhutan), Fatoumata Sylla (Guinea) and Giorgia Cesarini (San Marino) have been selected to fill the universality invites in Paris, adding four new countries to the entry list.

Three quota places have been reassigned due to no eligible archer reaching the minimum standard on the 72-arrow 70-metre round (610 points for women, 640 for men) from Chad, Fiji and Tonga to Finland, Slovenia and Vietnam. 

The quota list for Paris is now complete – 128 archers from 53 countries – pending final registrations over the next two weeks.

Competition at the 2024 Olympic Games starts with qualifying on 25 July.
