Dubai awards last quota places to Paris 2024 Paralympic Games
Twelve nations added quota spots for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games at the final qualifier today in Dubai, 10 in the world event and two in the reserved pool for Africa and Oceania (Australia and South Africa). The full quota assignments are listed below.
Archers from Austria, Bangladesh and South Africa secured their countries’ first tickets for the upcoming Games.
Austrian 42-year-old Michael Meier won the compound men’s world qualifier, battling up from sixth seed to book the quota and saying afterwards that it was his “dream to go to Paris”.
“I’ve been doing archery since 2022 and it‘s been my goal since September 2023,” he continued. “This is just the start. There’s a long way to go.”
Austria has sent an archer to the Paralympics before – but Bangladesh has not.
“I‘m ecstatic,” said Joma Akter, who finished third in the compound women’s world qualifier with a bronze medal match victory (138-134) over US archer Teresa Wallace. “It’s a very proud moment for me to win a quota for my country… I will be training more to be better.”
There were only two tickets available in each of the six Paralympic competition categories (recurve, compound and W1 men and women).
But since both finalists in the compound women’s event at the final qualifier were Italian and Italy could only win a maximum of one spot, Akter’s third secured the quota.
Only one nation has qualified the full 12 places: China.
Some 38 countries have qualified at least one spot – slightly down on the 42 at Tokyo 2020 and 40 at Rio 2016 – but there are still 13 universality tickets, ensuring competition diversity, to issue before the competition roster in Paris is complete.
