Six quota places for the archery competitions at the next Olympic Games will be awarded during next week’s Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

Two – one for recurve men and one for recurve women – will be awarded to the country that wins gold in the recurve mixed team event. A further four will be awarded in the individual competitions, to the two top-ranked recurve women and recurve men.

Nations can win a maximum of one spot per gender – as there is no team qualification in Hangzhou.

This is the second qualifying event for archers in Asia after the Hyundai World Archery Championships in Berlin, where only three countries from the continent secured a surprisingly low number of quota places – eight in total.

  • INA flag Indonesia: 1 (1 man)
  • JPN flag Japan: 4 (3 men, 1 woman)
  • KOR flag Korea: 3 (3 men)

What if?

Japan wins the mixed team competition… then the silver medallists win the two Olympic quota places on offer in the Asian Games pairs event.

Indonesia or Korea win the mixed team competition… then they receive a women’s quota place, while the men’s is returned and added to the final qualification tournament, scheduled in Türkiye next June.

A country with a quota finishes first or second in an individual event… then the place is reallocated down to the next eligible archer in the final results list, starting with the bronze medallist, then fourth place (and so on), down to a theoretical maximum of eighth – although that won’t be necessary.

Key dates

  • Tuesday 3 October: Recurve eliminations
  • Wednesday 4 October: Mixed team finals
  • Saturday 7 October: Finals

Even though the individual eliminations take place before the mixed team finals, the pairs event takes priority in the Olympic qualifying system. Depending on how the matches play out, quotas might be confirmed on any of these three days of competition.

Competition at the Asian Games starts with qualifying on Sunday.
