Olympic mixed team quota available at African Championships
Six quota places for Paris 2024 will be now available to nations competing at the 2023 African Championships, following a decision to move the continent’s mixed team slots to the tournament.
Tickets to the next Olympics are reserved for the winners of the mixed team event at each of the five continental games – but it has been confirmed that no archery competition will be included on the programme of the next African Games, which are taking place in Ghana in March 2024.
The International Olympic Committee accepted a request from World Archery Africa to retain the places for the continent.
Olympic quota places will now be awarded to the mixed team champion at the African championships, as well as the top two recurve men and recurve women in the individual events.
Each nation can win a maximum of one spot per gender and the individual places will be reassigned (down to a maximum of eighth in the final ranking). The mixed team result takes priority.
No African country won a quota place at the primary qualifier in Berlin in August.
Nations may enter up to four archers per category into the African Championships. However, as it is acting as the continent’s individual qualification event for the Olympics and no standalone tournament will be held, only three archers will advance to the matchplay bracket after the 72-arrow 70-metre qualifying round.
The 2023 African Championships and continental qualifier will take place on 8-12 November in Nabeul, Tunisia.
