Chinese Taipei secures all-Asian recurve team podiums with win over USA
Chinese Taipei guaranteed all-Asian recurve team podiums at the third stage of the 2023 Hyundai Archery World Cup when they beat USA in the women’s bronze medal match on Thursday morning in Medellin.
Wei Chun-Heng, Tang Chih-Chun and Su Yu-Yang ensured their country would be leaving Colombia with double that tally as they progressed to Sunday’s final on the men’s side of the field.
“We can do better, maybe make some better judgements,” said Chiu Yi-Ching, women’s bronze medallist alongside Lei Chien-Ying and Peng Chia-Mao. “We gave each other great support and that allowed us to get the podium.”
“We are close because we’ve shot together for a long time, have great friendship and cooperation.”
USA was in a recurve women team’s final four for the first time in five years after beating Germany in a tiebreak.
Casey Kaufhold had an opportunity to force a shoot-off for bronze with a nine at her final arrow, but shot an eight leaving Chinese Taipei to complete the medal places.
Elsewhere, India continued their magical week in Medellin as Dhiraj Bommadevara, Mrinal Chauhan and Tushar Prabhakar Shelke secured recurve men’s bronze amid Asian domination.
After claiming third spot in the two compound team events, India followed suit beating China to clinch a return to the podium after placing eighth in Shanghai.
“It’s a very successful team event,” said Bommadevara, who was part of the trio winning silver in Antalya. “We are happy but not satisfied, because we are going towards gold medals.”
“From first end, first arrow to last end, last arrow, high scores or low scores, we support each of us very good,” he added. “These are all steps for us, all great learnings.”
Korea had already delivered on its status as top seeds, moving into the finals of both recurve team finals, and are on track to remain unbeaten in team competitions in 2023.
The women will face China in the first match on the final day of stage three before the men take on Chinese Taipei.
Competition continues in Medellin with recurve qualifying this afternoon.
