Since late 2020, World Archery and the World Academy of Sport offer scholarships to international archers and sports administrators towards postgraduate studies in sports management.

The four-module certification programme is run online by the University of London and aims at helping transition to professional life after sport.

Since 2020, 14 full or partial scholarships to applicants from Australia, Brazil, Hong Kong China, Indonesia, India, Iran, Luxembourg, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Trinidad and Tobago, and the US Virgin Islands.

Among the latest intake, which began in January 2022, there were two representatives of the sport of archery, including Brazilian Olympian athlete Marina Canetta Gobbi and Rupesh Kumar Singh. Marina received a full scholarship, covering the entirety of the 3700 GBP course fee.

[It] is a great opportunity to understand a side of my sport that I was in contact, but not involved,” Marina said. I’m pretty sure that this programme it going to be essential to my future career, no matter which direction I decide to follow. And for sure, knowledge is always welcome.

The post-graduate cursus takes between one and five years to complete, making it possible to fit around competition or other life commitments.

The format of the programme is great, as an online course makes it possible for me to maintain my athlete routine, with competitions and all, and still be able to study within my schedule.

Financial management and sports strategy form the core syllabus, with optional modules covering topics such as development, events, marketing and media.

The content is very interesting, it’s almost like we are learning about the backstage of all we live as an athlete,” the Brazilian archer explained. In this semester, sports finances are the main topic, and it was something that I was very disinterested about, but as far as we are aware how things work, it definitely became more interesting.

The postgraduate certificate (PGCert) in international sports management is globally recognised and worth 60 credits towards a master’s degree.

Applications has been accepted since 24 October for scholarships towards the February 2023 intake. The deadline is 13 December 2022 and submissions must come through the online form.
