Dubai 2022 goes ‘beyond competitions and medals’
More than 200 archers from 40 nations have been welcomed to Dubai ahead of the first competition arrows at the 2022 World Archery Para Championships.
His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, chair of the Dubai Sports Council and chair of the Higher Committee for the Protection of the Rights of People of Determination, opened the championship today (Monday) at a ceremony held at Al Seef Heritage on the banks of Dubai Creek.
The opening ceremony was attended by a number of VIPs, officials, delegates and athletes from the participating countries who were treated to acrobatic archery, plus a laser and firework displays with a video presentation showing a child inspired to start his sporting career through the history of archery.
“The purpose of these world championships goes beyond just competitions and medals,” said Thani Juma Berregard, who’s leading the organisers, at the launch.
“It will leave a strong legacy with its inspiring stories. The ‘My Community – A City for Everyone’ initiative launched by the Crown Prince of Dubai, sends the message that the word ‘disability’ is not part of the dictionary of the nation’s society.”
World Archery secretary general Tom Dielen attended the ceremony.
“This federation is honoured to hold a world championship in this beautiful city for the first time, which occupies a very important place in the world,” he said.
“Dubai has a rich history of investment in international para sport and the Fazza tournament held here is one of the most popular para archery events on the calendar. Our thanks and appreciation go to the members of the organising committee, who have worked hard to ensure these long-awaited championships provide the very best showcase for our talented athletes.”
