Sawyer Sullivan has beaten the under-18 (cadet) compound men’s world record for the 72-arrow 50-metre round twice in two days, shooting 708 and then 714 out of a possible 720 points at the USA’s youth nationals.

“My mom was calling my arrows and it was really scary but it was really fun. This is what I live for,” he said.

“Shooting is my favourite thing to do so that was… it was like living in the moment.”

Subject to ratification, both scores come in higher than the standing record of 706, shot by Croatian archer Mario Vavro at the senior World Archery Championships in Belek in 2013.

Sullivan took an under-18 world team title with the USA at the last World Archery Youth Championships in 2019.

Still only 17 years of age and with a jump into the under-21 (junior) ranks imminent, these latest big competition results indicate a bright future ahead.
