D’Amour, Nespoli, Brown and Unruh qualify for 2021 World Cup Final

With the recurve semifinalists decided at the third and last stage of the international circuit in Paris, four more archers are officially qualified for the 2021 Hyundai Archery World Cup Final in Yankton this September.

Nicholas D’Amour and Mauro Nespoli, who both lost in the quarterfinals at this tournament, are mathematically safe in the recurve men’s rankings.

After recording points finishes at all three stages this season, Lisa Unruh is safe in the recurve women’s event – as is Mackenzie Brown, although she could still qualify as the stage winner from Paris, as she will compete in the final four this Sunday.

This weekend’s finals matches will also decide whether Michelle Kroppen – who was eliminated from this tournament – or Elena Osipova or Ana Vazquez take the third women’s ranking invite.

Osipova and Vazquez would qualify as stage winners should they take gold in the French capital, but one or both can also overtake Michelle in the ranking should the results fall a certain way.

The situation is further complicated by the presence of stage one winner Deepika Kumari and Brown in the Paris final four.

Should Kumari win a second leg, a fourth points slot will open up. Should Brown win, her points ticket will change to a stage winner’s spot, making that available to the ranking.

It ultimately means that two of those three archers (Kroppen, Osipova and Vazquez) will qualify for Yankton.

The third and last recurve men’s points qualifier will be decided in a world-ranking tiebreak between Spain’s Yun Sanchez and Germany’s Maximilian Weckmueller when the new list is issued on Monday – unless Brady Ellison wins his second stage of the year or Jack Williams takes gold in his first final four, then both qualify. (Williams winning Paris would eliminate the USA’s host country spot.)

Weckmueller is currently ranked sixth in the world.

Britain’s Patrick Huston and Italy’s Federico Musolesi will only qualify for Yankton if either of them wins gold this weekend, as they are both unable to accrue enough points to jump ahead of Sanchez and Weckmueller.

The final line-ups for the recurve events at this year’s Hyundai Archery World Cup Final won’t be decided for a few more weeks, of course. For the first time in the history of the event, the individual Olympic Champions will also join the rosters as wildcards.

So there’s still a chance – if slim – that Korea’s Kang Chae Young will defend her circuit crown at the end of this year.

If all that seems a little confusing, check back on Sunday for the recurve final fours at the third stage of the 2021 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Paris – when those last points places will be decided.
