Casey Kaufhold sets under-21 world record during US Olympic trials

Casey Kaufhold poses with world record target during the US Olympic trials.

Casey Kaufhold has shot a new under-21 world record, subject to ratification, for the 72-arrow 70-metre qualification round during the USA’s Olympic trials in Utah.

The 17-year-old is the first archer in the recurve women’s junior age group to hit 680-plus in registered competition, scoring 682 out of a possible 720 points, which is four more than the current record held by Korea’s An San since 2019.

The trials are being held on a normally windy field at the Easton Salt Lake Archery Centre.

With just two days left until the US Olympic team is announced, Kaufhold has a comfortable lead in the recurve women’s selection race.

World Archery Champion Brady Ellison is top of the men’s trials leaderboard.

Kaufhold broke onto the international circuit as a senior at the age of just 15 in 2019, winning mixed team gold at the Pan Am Games with Ellison that year. That result qualified the USA a women’s quota spot for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Casey is currently ranked as the 73rd-best recurve woman in the world.
