Wu Jiaxin shoots 689 as China’s Olympic trials start in Chengdu

Wu Jiaxin posted an impressive result of 689 out of a possible 720 points for the 72-arrow, 70-metre ranking round on the second day of China’s trials for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Her mark is thought to be the third-highest recurve women’s score shot in registered competition history, trailing the world record of 692 shot by Korea’s Kang Chae Young at the 2019 Hyundai World Archery Championships in ’s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, by just three points.

China has a full quota of three men and three women for the upcoming Olympics, having qualified its teams at the most recent world championships.

The eight men and eight women on the national squad have entered these last trials. As well as Jiaxin, a quarterfinalist at Rio 2016, the line-up also features London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Dai Xiaoxiang.

The athletes who remain in contention are shooting in a purpose-built replica arena in the city of Chengdu, complete with the colour of the Games, for 20 consecutive days before the final team is decided on 14 April.
