Americas launches remote Online Archery Cup with live streaming of tiebreakers

The first remote archery tournament for athletes across the Americas has entered the live-streaming phase of the competition.

The Online Archery Cup of the Americas, which is inspired by World Archery’s Lockdown Knockout run earlier this year, started in mid-August with qualification rounds held by 23 of the continent’s national federations.

Top-ranked archers in nine divisions, para and able-bodied, have been invited to participate in live matchplay in September and October.

There were ties for the last spot in the recurve men’s event and the last two places in the compound men’s competition.

Rather than resolving them with a random draw, the archers agreed to take part in a sudden-death style tiebreak – in which the closest-to-the-middle arrow won, except 10s were reshot – streamed live on the World Archery Americas’ Facebook page.

Adrian Munoz beat Daniel Rezende, shooting a pass-through 10 to his opponent‘s nine, to take the last recurve men’s place.

Jean Pizarro and Sebastian Arenas qualified for the compound men’s bracket ahead of Douglas Nolasco.

The head-to-head matches begin on Monday 14 September with the recurve women’s division, featuring Mexican Olympic silver medallist Aida Roman and archers from Colombia, Canada, Argentina and Brazil.

Schedule

  • Week 1 (from 14 September): Compound women
  • Week 2 (from 21 September): Para compound and W1
  • Week 3 (from 28 September): Compound men
  • Week 4 (from 12 October): Recurve women
  • Week 5 (from 19 October): Para recurve
  • Week 6 (from 26 October): Recurve men

Technology

The Online Archery Cup of the Americas is being produced remotely, using Stream Yard, a cloud-based video mixing and presentation software. Archers connect two devices, usually mobile phones, via video call and compete live against each other from different locations.

This event will also make use of a panel of judges who watch the competition live and can be called upon to render a decision on any questionable arrow.

Matches will only be streamed on World Archery Americas‘ Facebook page. Commentary language will be Spanish or English, depending on the nationality of the participants.

Lockdown Knockout

World Archery ran the Lockdown Knockout in May and June, during the height of pandemic restrictions.

The groundbreaking tournament saw eight world-class recurve archers and eight elite compound archers compete in first mixed-gender live international event from their own homes and ranges.

Colombia’s Sara Lopez won the compound competition after beating World Archery Youth Champion Anders Faugstad in the final. Crispin Duenas of Canada defeated Aida Roman to win the recurve event.

Full replays, including 52-minute television highlights, are available to watch on World Archery’s YouTube channel.
