World records headline qualification at TRUBall/Axcel Roma Archery Trophy

Crispin Duenas, Kim Surin and Kris Schaff joined new world record holder Sarah Prieels as top qualifiers in the championship categories at the 2019 TRUBall/Axcel Roma Archery Trophy on 15 December.

Prieels’ score of 597 out of a possible 600 points during the second of the three ranking round sessions was a new compound women’s record.

“I’m very happy. I had good feelings during the round and after several attempts, this world record has finally come,” she said.

“After this score, it would be nice to end this adventure in Rome with a gold medal but I honestly don’t want to think about the matches and final. I just want to enjoy this moment, this record and a performance that made me happy.”

Amanda Mlinaric, world number one Alexis Ruiz, So Chaewon, Tanja Jensen and Paige Pearce all shot 590-plus.

Brazilian para archer Jane Karla Gogel broke the second world record of the day – for the compound women’s open category – with 577 points.

“When you’re competing, it’s impossible to know at first if there’ll be the conditions to beat the world record,” said Gogel. “But I felt good and knew that I could perform well.”

There was a three-way score tie at the top of the compound men’s qualification board. Macau Open winner Kris Schaff, GT Open winner Mike Schloesser and Dave Cousins all had 598 points for the 60-arrow 18-metre ranking round.

Schaff took the top seed, Cousins second and Schloesser third in a coin toss.

Crispin Duenas and Jack Williams led the recurve men, both with 594, ahead of world record holder and world number one Brady Ellison on 593.

The top-scoring recurve woman was Kim Surin on 593. She and two of her Hyundai Mobis teammates paced the round. World number one Kang Chae Young and Sim Yeji were second and third with 590 points.

This third event of the 2020 Indoor Archery World Series also includes competitions for barebow, longbow and youth categories.

David Garcia Fernandez (558) and Lina Bjorklund (535) topped the barebow ranking rounds; Giuliano Faletti (506) and Encarna Garrido (427) were the high-scoring longbows.

Alessandro Paoli, Karen Hervat, Robin Jaatma and Elisa Bazzichetto took top seeds in the junior events.

Competition concludes at the TRUBAll/Axcel Rome Archery Trophy on Sunday 15 December. Barebow, recurve and compound finals will be streamed live on World Archery’s YouTube channel from 16h15 CET (local).
