World Archery releases calendar for 2020 Hyundai Archery World Cup season

The 15th season of the Hyundai Archery World Cup will see elite archers compete at stages in Guatemala City, Shanghai and Berlin from April to June 2020.

A final, whose host is yet to be announced, is scheduled for the end of September.

• Stage 1: Guatemala City, Guatemala – 20-26 April
• Stage 2: Shanghai, China – 4-10 May
• Stage 3: Berlin, Germany – 21-28 June
• Final: to be confirmed – 26-27 September (TBC)

Seasons that run in the same year as an Olympic Games are traditionally shortened from four to three stages.

The Hyundai Archery World Cup is World Archery’s premier international tournament circuit. Competitions are held for the Olympic-style recurve bow and compound archers.

Shanghai and Berlin are established hosts. Guatemala City will hold a leg for the first time in 2020, taking over from Medellin, Colombia as the Americas stop on the tour.

The third and last stage in Berlin will also act as the final qualifying tournament for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which is why the event starts one day earlier than the other legs. This extension is only expected to affect recurve archers.

(The competition length will remain the same for compound athletes.)

As well as the traditional finals field, the hosts in Berlin are expected to build an Olympic qualification arena on the famous Maifield.

This secondary arena will be in use throughout the competition week and act as the venue for the critical matches in the last stages of the road to Tokyo 2020. Footage of the quarterfinals onwards will be streamed live on World Archery platforms.

Brady Ellison, Kang Chae Young, Mike Schloesser and Sara Lopez enter next season as the reigning Hyundai Archery World Cup Champions. They won the 2019 Hyundai Archery World Cup Final held in the Russian capital of Moscow at the start of September.

World Archery president Prof Dr Ugur Erdener said: “Our sport has changed significantly over the last 15 years and the Hyundai Archery World Cup is now integral to the international calendar. The circuit is an established and successful product for athletes, fans and broadcasters.”

“In the build-up to Tokyo 2020, these events in Guatemala, Shanghai and Berlin will be the clearest barometer of performance and the brightest spotlight for the archers that will compete at the Olympic Games.”
