Top shot: The best archer at the fourth World Cup stage of 2019?

The frantic international calendar cooled down after the 2019 Hyundai World Archery Championships in ’s-Hertogenbosch – but many of the world’s best were on the line just two weeks later at the fourth stage of the World Cup circuit in Berlin.

It was the last chance for archers to qualify for the 2019 Hyundai Archery World Cup Final. And, for many, the last major world tournament of the year.

Honourable mentions: Bae Jaehyeon, Evren Cagiran, Alexandra Mirca and Dan Olaru

Korean international debutant Bae made it all the way to the gold medal match before falling to the number-one-ranked archer on this subjective list.

Cagiran won his gold medal match against Mike Schloesser. His near-perfect X to win the shoot-off in the final was impressive.

Moldova took its first-ever medal on the Hyundai Archery World Cup circuit, courtesy Mirca and Olaru finishing second in the recurve mixed team event. Both these archers have been around for some time but are still in their early 20s – and have plenty of room to grow on the scene.

3. Alexis Ruiz, USA

Perhaps the most impressive archer of 2019? Definitely one of the best debut seasons we’ve ever seen.

Alexis Ruiz was the only archer to medal at all four stages of the circuit this year and Berlin brought her first gold medal. She wasn’t excellent in the victory – but she was definitely better than anybody else.

2. An San, Korea

First international tournament, first individual gold medal – and first career ticket for the Hyundai Archery World Cup Final firmly pocketed.

But those three sets in the arena, to beat teammate Jeon Ina, stand out. Never before in front of the cameras, pomp and circumstance, An San delivered volleys of 29, 29 and 30 points to take gold.

1. Mete Gazoz, Turkey

There were so many points during the week in Berlin at which Mete Gazoz was the most impressive archer on the field.

He shot a 343 first half over qualifying in strong winds and, although not able to keep it up for the stretch, showcased incredible shooting in tough conditions.

Then the team final, in which his Turkish group was victorious, ended when Gazoz himself took to the line to deliver a tiebreak-winning 10.

And finally, that second consecutive individual final in Berlin – and second consecutive victory. This time in straight sets as the 20-year-old simply outclassed his opponent in the arena.
