Eric Peters’ competition best leads Canadian recurve men to qualify sixth at worlds
The Canadian recurve men’s team closed out a strong performance in qualification at the 2019 Hyundai World Archery Championships in ’s-Hertogenbosch to rank sixth ahead of the eliminations.
A close race during the ranking round saw Turkey, China, the USA, Japan, Great Britain and Canada all finish within seven points of one another.
This event is particularly important because the top eight teams after matchplay will win Olympic quota places.
It was the right time for Eric Peters to post an international competition best of 683 out of a possible 720 points – to lead the Canadian team.
“We stayed in Europe and did some training in the UK. We didn’t fly back home and do another competition,” said veteran Olympian Crispin Duenas. “Did that make the difference? I’m going to say yes.”
Canada will face the winner of a match between India and Norway to decide the Olympic spots on Wednesday.
“We haven’t had a full men’s team at the Olympics since 2008. So this is a really good prospect for us to take to the next stage,” said Duenas.
“Personally speaking, it’ll be good to go to the Olympics not as a solo person for once.”
Qualifying among the top eight teams is crucial because it gives a bye into the second round of the competition – meaning the Canadian men only have to win that one match to get those Olympic places.
The 2019 Hyundai World Archery Championships take place on 10-16 June in ’s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.
