Yankton, USA awarded 2021 Hyundai World Archery Championships

The 2021 Hyundai World Archery Championships have been awarded to the city of Yankton, South Dakota, USA after the World Archery Executive Board held a vote during congress in ’s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.

It follows Friday’s announcement that the championships would be held in Berlin in 2023.

Yankton previously hosted the World Archery Youth Championships in 2015, the World Archery Indoor Championships in 2018 – the last, following a resolution to remove the event from the calendar that was passed yesterday – and will also host the World Archery Field Championships in 2020.

“Archery and Yankton are inextricably linked. The city has rallied around two of our previous world championships and we expect a similarly high standard of event and the same incredible community spirit in 2021,” said World Archery President Prof Dr Ugur Erdener.

“While it may not be the largest or most populous place on the planet, Yankton may be the most passionate about our sport – and for the athletes, the audience and the atmosphere at the world championships, passion matters.”

The championships will be hosted by the NFAA Foundations and based at the organisation’s permanent archery facility in Yankton. 

“This event in 2021 will be our biggest challenge yet when it comes to delivering an international tournament at the highest level,” said NFAA Foundations President Bruce Cull. 

“We know how much this event means to the archery community and now we have to show everyone how much it means to Yankton.”

Following a motion passed during proceedings in ’s-Hertogenbosch, future congresses are no longer required to take place alongside world championships. It is yet to be confirmed whether World Archery Congress in 2021 will take place in Yankton or at the Archery World Cup Final that year.

The 53rd World Archery Congress takes place on 1-2 June 2019 ahead of the World Archery Para Championships and Hyundai World Archery Championships in ’s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.
