More than 600 archers to shoot at world championships for the first time

The Hyundai World Archery Championships is set to feature more than 600 archers for the first time in the event’s 88-year history after final entries closed over the weekend. A total of 610 athletes from 92 countries have registered for ’s-Hertogenbosch 2019.

Recurve men is the largest category with 211, followed by recurve women with 161. There are also 238 compound archers entered, 139 men and 99 women.

(Late entries are still being accepted however these incur a penalty fee so the competitor numbers are not expected to change significantly.)

Under the current format at international archery tournaments, only 104 athletes and 24 teams advance to the matchplay stage of the competition. With this number of athletes registered, there will be cuts after the ranking round in three of the individual categories and all-but-one of the team events.

There are 57 recurve men’s teams, 45 recurve women’s teams, 64 recurve mixed teams, 38 compound men’s teams, 22 compound women’s teams and 45 compound mixed teams scheduled to compete.

World championships held in the year immediately prior to each Olympic Games always attract a higher number of competitors, the previous three all breaking 500 total entries.

• Copenhagen 2015: 585 athletes from 92 countries
• Torino 2011: 562 athletes from 84 countries
• Leipzig 2007: 529 athletes from 78 countries

Countries may send a maximum of three athletes per category – recurve men, recurve women, compound men and compound women – to the World Archery Championships, unlike Hyundai Archery World Cup stages where the maximum is four.

There are 56 places for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games available at the ’s-Hertogenbosch 2019 Hyundai World Archery Championships.

The top eight recurve teams qualify spots for three athletes, along with the top four individuals from nations that are not already qualified in the team event. Places are won for a nation and not assigned to a specific athlete.

A total of 304 para athletes from 57 countries are entered to compete in the 2019 World Archery Para Championships taking place in ’s-Hertogenbosch in the week preceding the Hyundai World Archery Championships.

• Recurve men open: 68
• Recurve women open: 38
• Compound men open: 82
• Compound women open: 49
• W1 men: 31
• W1 women: 16
• Visually impaired: 20

The last World Archery Para Championships that also acted as a Paralympic qualifier saw 260 athletes from 46 countries compete in Donaueschingen, Germany in 2015.

The 2019 Hyundai World Archery Championships take place on 10-16 June and World Archery Para Championships on 3-9 June in ’s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.
