India’s seven medals tops standing at first leg of 2019 Asia Cup
Kazakhstan’s Ilfat Abdullin and Chinese archer Zheng Yichai collected the individual recurve titles as India topped the medal standing at the first leg of the 2019 Asia Cup in Bangkok, Thailand.
The Indian team collected seven medals in total, with three of those gold, two silver and two bronze.
Kazakhstan’s lone gold medal came courtesy Abdullin, who beat Ruman Shana of Bangladesh, 6-2, in an impressive recurve men’s final.
“I felt the final was quite easy. We were well prepared and it felt great,” said Ilfat. “I’ve learned very quickly that the most important thing is to believe in myself.”
The recurve women’s gold medal match, between Zheng and Chinese teammate Meng Fanxu, was the only final of the event to go to a shoot-off. Zheng got the better of her counterpart, nine points to eight.
India added mixed team gold and women’s team silver during the recurve finals to an already impressive haul collected by its compound squad.
Other nations to climb the podium included Iran, Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia, Chinese Taipei, Singapore and Russia.
The second leg of the 2019 Asia Cup is scheduled to take place on 1-7 August in Taipei City, Chinese Taipei.
