Wei Chung-Heng delivers sublime 10 to upset Korea

Chinese Taipei beat Korea in an incredible shoot-off to take the recurve men’s team gold medal at the fourth stage of the 2018 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Berlin, Germany. 

It all came down to Wei Chun-Heng’s final arrow of the tiebreak.

He needed not only a 10, but a better 10 than Im Dong Hyun’s last shot to claim victory for Chinese Taipei.

“Just shoot it,” said Wei, when asked what was going through his mind as he stepped up for the make-or-break arrow. And when it landed: “Amazing.”

Wei delivered an arrow in the X-ring and the world’s number 10 ranked recurve men’s team upset the Berlin favourites and world-leading Korean trio.

“I learned a lot of experience in this tournament, especially beating Korea and I think we are really ready for the Asian Games,” said Tang Chih-Chun.

This was an important victory for the Chinese Taipei men, often an afterthought in the rivalry with Korea due to the prevalence of the two nations’ women meeting in important finals.

Wei, Tang and Jao Ting-Yu will look to replicate the success in Berlin at the Asian Games in Jakarta in a few weeks’ time.

While the Korean men were relegated to silver, the women team did leave Berlin with gold, taking a straight-set victory over Great Britain.

The fourth stage of the 2018 Hyundai Archery World Cup takes place in Berlin, Germany on 16 to 22 July.
