Olympic Champion Chang seeds top in Berlin as Tsyrempilova prevents Korean sweep

The Olympic Champion Chang Hye Jin finished first after a windy afternoon ranking round at the fourth stage of the 2018 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Berlin, Germany. She scored 666 out of a possible 720 points, 15 more than her teammate Kang Chae Young in second.

“I want to use this opportunity to get some experience on how to manage the [Asian] Games,” said Rio 2016 winner Chang. “I’m already qualified for the World Cup Final after winning in Shanghai, so I don't have to think about it.”

Korean third Jung Dasomi ended up fourth, with 649 points, on the same score as Russia’s Sayana Tsyrempilova, but with three 10s less.

Sayana was only in 11th at halfway with 321 points, but shot 328 – equalling Chang – with her last 36 arrows to climb up into the top three.

This is the last event for athletes to gain competition practice prior to the Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia next month. All four of the Korean recurve women in Berlin will attend, but the three that will shoot in the team event is not yet decided.

“It’s a good chance for me and the team," said Chang. “We want to work well together in the team round.”

Zheng Yichai, local favourite Lisa Unruh, Tan Ya-Ting and fourth Korean Lee Eun Gyeong completed the recurve women’s top eight, taking a bye into the third round.

The fourth stage of the 2018 Hyundai Archery World Cup takes place in Berlin, Germany on 16 to 22 July.
