Italian women break team matchplay world record
Marcella Tonioli, Irene Franchini and Laura Longo scored 237 out of a possible 240 points during their semifinal against Great Britain at the 2017 World Archery Europe Indoor Championships to set a new compound women’s team matchplay world record by a point, subject to ratification.
“Well done girls. A world record is what this day has brought us,” Tonioli posted on Facebook.
The previous world-best mark of 236 points had been set at the world indoors in Poland in 2009 by the USA.
Longo and Franchini were both in the Italian team that finished third at the World Archery Indoor Championships in Ankara in 2016, where Franchini also took individual gold. Tonioli is the reigning Hyundai Archery World Cup Champion.
The score, which is also a European as well as world record, is expected to be ratified in the coming days.
The World Archery Europe Indoor Championships take place 5-12 March 2017 in Vittel, France.
