Aquece Rio test event: Ki, Chang and Choi top women’s seeds
Ki Bo Bae started strong in Rio with a total of 681 points out of 720 for the 72-arrow, 70-metre ranking round at the Aquece Rio International Archery Challenge.
“The results were okay but my shooting was bad,” said the reigning Olympic and World Archery Champion.
Over the first 36 arrows of the round, Bo Bae only missed the yellow twice, with a seven and an eight. Over the second half, she didn’t miss it once.
Ki recently set the world record for recurve women’s qualification at 686.
In Rio, she was followed by teammates Chang “The Destroyer” Chae Young and Choi Misun – on 676 and 671, respectively. As team they shot a total of 2028 points, 49 more than Russia – who had the second seed.
Despite the good results, Korea’s world women’s title holder has her sights set on a much larger prize.
“Being in Rio this week is not just about the results,” Ki said. “This is just a test event for us to try and work things out. What I really want, and care about, is making the national Olympic team.”
Teammate Chang agreed: “Individual and team results are good, but whatever happens here, I’m just focused on making the Olympic team for next year.”
Ksenia Perova from Russia and Kawanaka Kaori from Japan both finished with 666, but Ksenia shot five more 10s.
