Jesse BROADWATER beats Britain’s Chris WHITE to take a second world field title in a row
After winning the men’s team gold medal, the USA’S Jesse BROADWATER defended his individual world field title to Brit Chris WHITE. The match was tied 65-65 after four targets – and went to a shoot-off.
Jesse shot a 6, while Chris could only muster a 4.
“It was a really good match. I knew how hard Chris prepared for the championships, and that’s all on him… He made it a great match the whole way through,” a pleased Jesse said.
Ten years since his own world field title, Chris was content with silver: “when it comes down to four targets in a final, anything can happen.”
“We both tied and had a one arrow shoot-off, and was a really good one! It’s well deserved,” he added.
The bronze match between TURSIC (SLO) and ANDERSON (USA) – shot on the four-target finals course, with big screen and lake-view for the showpiece last target – also went to a tiebreaker.
For his first world field championship competition, Steve was surprised with his strong results in both the qualification and elimination rounds. He said at the start of the week he felt the pressure to show up and shoot his best – and he did just that.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite enough to topple Slavko TURSIC in the bronze final. ANDERSON shot a 5 to the Slovenian’s 6.
TURSIC’s teammate on the Slovenia team, Toja CERNE, continued her outstanding week in Zagreb. She led from the very start of the championship and beat 2012 world champ – and Croatian – Ivana BUDEN by 13 points in the final.
Bronze went to Sandrine VANDIONANT, who won a tight tussle with Great Britain’s Christie-Lee RAVENSCROFT, 61-58.
Lisa UNRUH (GER) became the new recurve world field champion by beating French athlete Laure DELFAU, 58-48. The German – qualified to shoot at the Lausanne 2014 World Cup final – won the match on the last target. She shot a couple of 5s and a 6, while Laure couldn’t do better than three 4s.
“I feel amazing! It was difficult to stay stable on the field, but I got through,” UNRUH said.
World Games champion Naomi FOLKARD (GBR) picked up the bronze medal by beating Anna BOTTO (ITA), 57-53. Ana missed an arrow in the first target and Naomi took an early lead.
ELLISON beat VALLADONT by a single point in the recurve men’s gold final.
“I knew it was going to be a close match,” said Brady. “I expected both of us to shoot better scores… we both made mistakes, but I ended up on top.”
It’s Brady’s first field and first individual senior world title.
In the recurve men bronze medal match, Jerome BIDAULT (FRA) beat experienced Jon SHALES (GBR), 59-56. Those three points all came on the last target.
World Games Champion barebow archer Lina BJORKLUND (SWE) claimed her second world field title in a row by beating Italy’s Cinzia NOZIGLIA. Lina led the match by five points after the first target and only extended her lead.
On target three, Cinzia shot a 1 – and it put her too far behind to recover.
Val d’Isere silver medallist Eleonora STROBBE beat Eliette LALOUER 48-44 even though she missed an arrow.
In a tight match between Erik JONSSON and 2002 World Champion Martin OTTOSSON, Erik collected the Zagreb barebow men’s gold by just one point. An OTTOSON 1 didn’t help his campaign.
This is JONSSON’s third world field title. The last one was 10 years ago in Croatia.
FISHER beat the USA’s Ben ROGERS to bronze.
