Sweden’s barebows sitting in top three places after unmarked qualification at world field

Erik JONSSON claimed the top spot with 366 points. He was followed by his teammate and world champion in 2002, Martin OTTOSSON, who trailed by just one point and Bobby LARSSON by four.

“It was a flat course without being too challenging. It’s still a beautiful way to start as you can get into your own shooting and enjoy the field,” OTTOSSON said.

“At the end it was raining and I shot low because of the speed reduction of the water on the arrows and the bow,” Martin explained. “But I felt good with my performance during the day.”

In the barebow women´s division, Val d’Isere silver medallist, Eleonora STROBBE (ITA), led the round with 330 points setting her goal to the finals: “Marked distances are easy for me. I just pull the string and shoot… I’m trying to repeat my score tomorrow and get into the finals.”

In the compound men´s category, Jesse BROADWATER (USA) shot an impressive 425 points, one of the highest ever field scores on record. Jesse is the reigning world champion from Val d’Isere two years ago – and leads a States top three at halfway in Zagreb qualification, rounded out by teammates Steve ANDERSON and Dave COUSINS.

Slovenia’s Toja CERNE’s 408 was best out of the compound women. CERNE, who was a surprise frontrunner over the 2014 target archery season, came in ahead of Sandrine VANDIONANT of France and Great Britain’s Christie RAVENSCROFT.

Linda OCHOA is currently ranked fourth. The Mexican only learnt field archery in the last couple of months, and will shoot against CERNE at the World Cup Final in Lausanne.

Another country to lead the qualification round was Germany, with Lisa UNRUH and Elena RICHTER leading the recurve women’s table. Both ladies also qualified for the this year’s World Cup Final and are favourites to make the field finals in Zagreb.

Four years removed from winning a world field title, Alan WILLS leads the recurve men’s division early in 2014. The Brit was four points better than States pair Jake KAMINSKI and Brady ELLISON on the unmarked course.

Tomorrow athletes will complete the qualification round in another 24-target course, this time over marked distances. The top 16 athletes from each category will advance to the individual eliminations on 22 August.
