SEGINA to shoot for Wroclaw bronze: win and in situation for World Cup Final

The 22-year-old won the recurve women’s European Championships in Armenia two weeks ago. If she beats India’s Deepika KUMARI on Sunday in Wroclaw, she’ll secure her second major achievement in a month.

KUMARI won’t be an easy opponent for Tatiana SEGINA. Despite a rough season, the three-time World Cup Final silver medallist has found resurgent form at this event, qualifying in first and rolling through her eliminations matches. She lost to China’s XU Jing in the semis.

XU Jing will shoot against surprise finalist Ika ROCHMAWATI from Indonesia for gold. But it’s SEGINA’s match-up that has the highest stakes.

“I knew that if I won the semifinal, I was in for Lausanne,” Tatiana said after her match. “But I didn’t know I still had a chance even if I lost.”

SEGINA was surprised to hear the news: “I’m going to have to approach this bronze match a little differently then. I will have more pressure, but that’s okay.”

“Before Wroclaw I thought I had to take gold. So this, now, is good news!”

Jean-Charles VALLADONT did need to take gold to climb the recurve men’s rankings enough to qualify for Lausanne. He too, however, lost in the semifinals.

“I’m disappointed,” he said after his loss to Rick VAN DER VEN, “but not too disappointed: I knew qualifying was basically mission impossible!”

VALLADONT did not lose a single set until the semifinals, when he lost three out of four to put himself out of Wroclaw gold and Lausanne appearance contention. The French reigning world field champion was happy with his shooting level, and keen to take bronze on Sunday: “a stage medal is always an important achievement.”

His bronze opponent will be Brazilian Marcus DALMEIDA – his first world-level individual final – before Dutch Olympic finalist VAN DER VEN shoots for gold against Italy’s Mauro NESPOLI.

Lausanne qualification: who’s in

Recurve men: VAN DER VEN, DALMEIDA, PLIHON, ELLISON, OH, KAHLLUND, LEE (7)

Recurve women: XU, JUNG, RICHTER, UNRUH, JOO, ROMAN (6)
