Woojin makes grand on much-anticipated return

“I had a year-long break because I didn’t make the national team,” admitted Woojin, right after shooting a 694/720 ranking round at 70 metres. “I shot a load with my club and then came back to the team for this year.”

It looked like he was going to break the world record for qualification after shooting 353/360 for his first 36 arrows. Over the second 36, though, KIM wasn’t able to keep it as tight.

Medellin is great, and the conditions are great. And I expected to break the record after the first half,” Woojin admitted.

“I tried to concentrate just on my shots, because after all – that’s what gets the score.”

Overall, the Korean – who won the worlds in 2011 but did not qualify for the national team at London 2012 – was happy to be back on the field in uniform, and on top.

“I’m excited to be here, try hard in Medellin and in the future – and look forward to Rio.”

Behind the top three Koreans in the top three seeds was USA archery Brady ELLISON, with probably his best qualification performance in a long time.

“It’s not a big score compared to some of the other guys out there,” said a humble Brady. “But if I clean up going forward, I’ll be on top again.”

Visiting a tournament in the Americas is a luxury for the States team, who often travel to Europe and Asia to compete on the World Cup stage. In the same time zone, there’s no jetlag nor time difference with friends and family to cope with.

After a strong qualification, Brady is poised to get back to his winning ways: “I’m a hungry man,” he said. “I really, really want to get back on that podium and win again. I will be pushing it tomorrow.”
