25 April 2012 - Athlete of the Week: KI Bo Bae (KOR)

Athlete of the Week: KI Bo Bae (KOR) Lausanne – 25 April 2012  The Korean recurve archer KI Bo Bae has won two gold medals in the individual and the team competition at the Archery World Cup 2012 Stage 1 in Shanghai. This result has allowed her to recover the 1st place of the World Ranking, a position she had previously occupied between June and August 2011.   The 24-year-old KI Bo Bae dominated the Shanghai World Cup in recurve women earlier this month. She won the individual gold 6-2 against FANG Yuting (CHN) and led her team to the gold medal 222-212 against India.   This achievement allows KI Bo Bae to recover the top spot of the World Ranking. She had already occupied that position between 30 May and 31 August 2011.   2011 has been KI Bo Bae’s most successful year. She won the mixed team world title in Turin, Italy, as well as the bronze medal in the team event. One month later she won three gold medals at the Summer Universiade held in China. She ended the year 2011 with 3rd place individually and victory in the team event at the Olympic Test Event in London.   The new No. 1-ranked female recurve archer in the world, KI Bo Bae is on target for an Olympic gold medal in 2012.   We met the Korean lady at the Shanghai World Cup where she answered the following questions.   What do you think your teammate LEE Sun Jin can bring to the Korean team and to yourself? At first we didn't know each other well, and I was a bit scared. But now it's getting better and I feel like I have many things to learn from her, especially about leadership.   How does it feel to have an Olympic champion and medallist in the team? It can be a kind of relief because of her experience. We can get so much good advice from her.   How much confidence did your two full seasons in the Korean team bring to you? I'm very proud to be a member of the national team. For each year there have been so many changes in terms of competitiveness. Other continents have improved and I have learnt a lot from that. There have been changes in the competition format and I have also learnt a lot from them.   Were you happy or disappointed after the World Championships Turin 2011? It was fifty-fifty! In terms of performance it was quite disappointing. But from failure I learnt a lot, especially on how to do training for new international games.   What learning did you take from the Test Event of the Olympic Games (3rd and 1st places)? At first, that I need more skills to manage tournaments! But it was also a good experience as a preparation for the Olympics. Now I know about the stadium and the environment. I know how it feels!   Is there anything else you would like to add? The winter season in Korea was difficult. The schedule was very tight. Finally, I succeeded in being in the national team and I'm looking forward to this season. Maybe this is my last chance for the Olympics… Competition is hard in Korea; there are so many good archers very close to each other in terms of skills. Normally I have a very positive mind, so I'll keep being positive!   Biography Extract:   KI Bo Bae (KOR) – Born on 20 February 1988   1st Team World Cup Shanghai 2012 1st Individual World Cup Shanghai 2012 1st Team London Archery Classic / Olympic Test Event 2011 3rd Individual London Archery Classic / Olympic Test Event 2011 1st Team Summer Universiade 2011 1st Mixed Team Summer Universiade 2011 1st Individual Summer Universiade 2011 3rd Team World Championships Turin 2011 1st Mixed Team World Championships Turin 2011 2nd Individual World Cup Antalya 2011 1st Team World Cup Antalya 2011 3rd Mixed Team World Cup Antalya 2011 1st Team World Cup Porec 2011 1st Team Asian Games Guangzhou 2010 3rd Individual World Cup Final Edinburgh 2010 1st Individual World Cup Shanghai 2010 1st Team World Cup Shanghai 2010 1st Mixed Team World Cup Shanghai 2010 2nd Individual World Cup Ogden 2010 1st Team World Cup Ogden 2010 2nd Individual World Cup Porec 2010 1st Team World Cup Porec 2010 1st Individual World University Championships Tainan 2008   More information on KI Bo Bae and all other archers at the World Archery website.   World Archery Communication
