Indoor – Outdoor, what is the difference ?

The difference of indoor and outdoor archery explained by the archers.   In outdoor competition, archers have to shoot 144 arrows in the qualification round, on 4 distances 90, 70, 50, 30 meters for men, and 70, 60, 50, 30 for women, meaning 36 arrows by distance. After the qualifications, they continue with elimination matches of 12 arrows each, shot at 70 meters only. The target face size is of 122 cm, going from 1 to 10 points.   In indoor competition, archers have to shoot 60 arrows in the qualification round, on one sole distance : 18 meters. After the qualifications, they go on with elimination matches of 12 arrows each, also shot at 18 meters. The size of the target face is of 40 cm, however only points from 5 to 10 count.   Therefore, it is as difficult to win in indoor than in outdoor, but what do the archers and coaches think about it ? What is the difference between indoor and outdoor ?   Eleni IOANNOU, GRE : The wind ! also the psychology is not the same, but I still prefer longer distances.   Peter ELZINGA, NED : There is no wind. In indoor, there is no room for mistakes, the scores are really close, and you cannot afford a bad arrow.   Peter NIUWENHUIS, NED coach : the main difference is the international attention indoor and outdoor gets, there are technical differences. In Netherlands, they have an indoor winter programme, however, on long distances. In Netherlands, they give a priority to outdoor, they have now more attention on the World Cup in Korea, reason why the recurve team is not in Izmir.   Sergio FONT, CUB, International Judge : the differences are the distances, the type of arrows, the size of the target face, and there is no sun problems in indoor.   Dejan SITAR, SLO : I prefer outdoor because the training spot is just 10m away from home and I like the sun (laugh)   Patrizio HOFER, SUI : there are more arrows to shoot in outdoor, and it is also nicer and open field, not a close hall as in indoor.   Fatima AGUDO, ESP : the distances, the climate, however I prefer 70m. Again, the main difference is the climate, the wind, the rain, the sun, the heat…   Dominique GENET, FRA : the wind and rain, the temperature…   Sébastien BRASSEUR, FRA : there are atmosphere conditions to handle in outdoor, while not in indoor, however indoor is more stressful   Jamie VAN NATTA, USA : it is easy : the game in outdoor is to hit the middle or the bull’s eye. The game in indoor is to not miss the middle !   Mads ELBROND, DEN, Team captain : Koreans do not win indoor !   Tanja ZORMANN, CRO : it is easier for me to practise indoor, because I always go in the evening after school, but I have better results in outdoor… I still prefer outdoor   Philippe BOUCLET, FRA, FITA Vice-President : Indoor is precision. Outdoor is the technical quality that makes the difference.   Chantal Steiner FITA Communication
