Spanish Olympic trials cut to eight-athlete squads after second phase

Spain’s Olympic trials have seen the field cut to eight-athlete recurve men’s and recurve women’s squads after the second of three selection events that finished on 19 December 2019.

Miguel Alvarino Garcia leads the men’s ranking and Alicia Marin is top of the women.

Elia Canales, who was individual girls’ silver medallist at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games, sits in third.

The third and final phase of the trials will conclude on Sunday 23 February. Spain will subsequently name the team it will send to all international events – including the Olympics – in 2020.

Spanish archers currently hold one spot for Tokyo.

Pablo Acha won the recurve men’s quota with his bronze medal at the 2019 European Games in Minsk. Acha is currently second in the trials ranking.

Spain has two chances to win a recurve women’s spot for the Games.

The first is the European Championships in Antalya in May and the second is the final qualification tournament being held as part of the third stage of the 2020 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Berlin in June.

There are also three men’s and three women’s team quota places available in Berlin.

Spain sent four archers – three men and one woman – to Rio 2016 but has not won an Olympic archery medal since the Spanish men took team gold at Barcelona 1992.

It remains Spain’s only Olympic archery medal to date.
