Ellison, Kim, Lee tie on 692 to lead recurve men’s ranking round in Medellin

Brady Ellison, Kim Woojin and Lee Seungyun each scored 692 out of a possible 720 points for the 72-arrow 70-metre ranking round to lead recurve men’s qualification at the first stage of the 2019 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Medellin, Colombia.

“It’s not bad. It’s not what I wanted, especially in this weather, but for how I felt today I’m pretty happy with it,” said top seed Ellison, who didn’t show up for practice yesterday after coming down with a fever.

“I really thought with the weather today that someone would have broken the world record. There was no arrows that needed to be aimed off. I’m not surprised that there’s that many high scores.”

Second-ranked Woojin said his score was a little lower than the near-perfect conditions warranted.

“A few shots were too quick and some arrows went to three-’o-clock because I didn’t predict the wind well,” he explained. “Since it’s the first World Cup, I was a bit nervous and that’s why I had some mistakes. I want to shoot a better score next time.”

Medellin is 2013 World Archery Champion Lee Seungyun’s first competition with the top Korean team since the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

His score, Lee said, was better than he was getting in practice: “It’s been a while. I approached this competition in test mode.”

Sjef van den Berg, Marcus D’Almeida, Lee Woo Seok, Mauro Nespoli and Steve Wijler completed the recurve men’s top eight.

Korea seeded top in the team event with 2067 points ahead of the Netherlands and USA.

Competition at the first stage of the 2019 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Medellin, Colombia runs until Sunday 28 April.
